Tech Hub Hudson’s latest coworking member is Blake Miner of iCompute Consulting. He is a software developer and consultant who works with Jon-Erik Chandler on a part-time basis to create custom software for mid-sized businesses who are not leveraging technology well or, in some cases, not at all.
What Services does your company provide to customers?
We build custom inventory management systems and/or project management systems to help mid-sized businesses operate closer to “real-time”. Our customer software solutions help organizations:
- Improve productivity and save money
- Make faster, more intelligent business decisions
- Quickly pivot and adapt to changing business demands
In addition to application development, we also provide the following services for our customers:
- Web design
- Server Admin/hosting
- General consulting/technical support
What is your background?
I have been in the software development business for 10 years. After developing software and analytical tools for GOJO for several years, I decided to start dabbling in web development using PHP and other technologies. By 2011, I had started consulting full-time.
In 2012, I landed a full-time job with one of my clients, Sweet Amandas, and while there helped develop and implement their candy vending machines. Using software to manage inventory for bulk candy for vending machines located across the country was a fun and challenging problem to solve.
After working with Sweet Amanda’s to refine their inventory management processes, I decided to “reboot” my consulting business and specialize in custom inventory and project management software.
Why did you become an entrepreneur?
I was always interested in working for myself, once I started doing it full-time, I realized I really liked it. Now it’s hard to go back to working for someone else!
What are your business goals?
Eventually move from custom software development to product development by zeroing in on a couple of niches in project management and/or inventory management.
Why did you choose Tech Hub Hudson?
For its centralized location between home and Cleveland for both Jon-Erik and me.
I initially started at a coworking place in downtown Akron but had to pay for parking every day. The fact that it was in the middle of a city was a little inconvenient, and I really didn’t want to deal with traffic.
The best thing about working in a coworking space is the opportunity to chat with other developers & creative people.
What kind of membership do you have?
I have a Dedicated Desk and Locking Cabinet membership.
What piece of advice would you give another entrepreneur?
It’s important to have a niche to get people’s attention: the more refined the niche = more business
I also think it’s important to keep yourself accountable. Even though you get busy, it’s important to go back and revisit your brand – make sure you are always working toward your ultimate goals and the reasons why started your own company in the place (e.g. choosing your own customers, who you work with).
