Smart Strategies to Stay Motivated When Self-Employed

Smart Strategies to Stay Motivated When Self-Employed

There are lots of upsides to being self-employed.

  • Being your own boss
  • Flexible hours
  • No need to get permission for time off when you need/want
  • Avoiding rush hour stress
  • Earn more, spend less
  • Wear what you want
  • Ability to select working partnerships/clients
  • No more office politics

Basically, a better shot of achieving a health work/life balance.

However, the downside is it is ALL up to you. No more accolades from a boss, no more bonus incentive for performance or subconscious need to impress or meet another person’s expectations (unless it is for a client, of course!). In other words, whether you work is up to you and only you.

At first, it’s all rainbows and sunshine, but we are human after all, so desire to work will wain from time to time. However, you're not the first to face the “motivation obstacle”. There are ways to stay self-motivated by staying grounded with goals, routine and physical/mental well-being.

5 Ways to Self Motivate

There are many ways to get motivated and stay motivated. We’ve broken them down into five methods.

  1. Establish a Plan

To get somewhere, you must have a plan of action or you will never “get there”. When it comes to being self-employed, just going with the flow and changing whenever the “wind blows” is not a viable strategy. Write down a personal mission statement, set realistic goals and reach goals. This will keep your eye on the prize and help nudge you along the way to grow professionally.

  1. Create a Routine

A routine does not have to mimic corporate America where you plan to work Monday-Friday 8 am to 5 pm (you’re in charge after all!). However, it is important at minimum set a guideline of how many hours you will work, days you will be available to clients/customers and how you will communicate/interact with business associates (e.g. you will only be available for meetings on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 9am and 2pm). This helps others know when you are available, and keeps you from working a crazy, demoralizing number of hours during the day/week.

  1. Make Rules

Be true to yourself so you can embrace the benefits of self-employment by making rules. Write down and follow through if there are certain projects you will not take, clients you won’t work with, dates you will always take off (e.g. anniversary, birthdays, child’s sporting event/recital). This will help you stay positive while setting expectations with colleagues and/or clients.

  1. Be Healthy

This doesn’t mean train for a marathon once a year! It means take care of yourself, both mentally and physically. Be nice to yourself by taking time out to do things you enjoy, interacting socially with friends/family. However, the healthier you are, the more productive and yes, happier you will be. Get enough sleep, eat healthy (at least from time to time) and take moments throughout the day to reset to stay productive.

It’s all about staying true to personal expectations/goals and minding, well, your mind. Self-employment is a great option, however, it is all up to you, so remember to embrace these nuggets of wisdom to stay motivated.
